The Color of Strength: Embracing the Passion Of Our Culture: An Anthology of Short Stories, Essays and Short Autobiographies is the work of 26 African American writers who share one common goal and that is to present our youth with a range of stories, essays, and short autobiographies about the grace, beauty, and strength of their culture. As we move into the second decade of the 21st Century, it is becoming increasingly important, that young Black Americans know their history. We can no longer afford to ignore our past. Knowledge of the sacrifices our ancestors made so that we can enjoy more liberties and freedoms than they had, will help us recognize our obligation to do the same for future generations.

As I travel around the country, I observe the same hedonistic, selfish behavior among young Blacks from Boston to Los Angeles. They feel responsible to no one but themselves. An eighteen-year-old drug pusher will sell drugs to a ten-year-old with no remorse. Young Blacks will shoot each other down with the ease of a hunter shooting prey. Getting pregnant or getting someone pregnant makes you a woman or a man. And doing time, either in jail or prison, is a rite of passage. These attitudes are shared all over Black America. And if they are not put in check, someday there will be no Black America. If our ancestors had taken the same kind of attitude, we would not be here today. The writers of this anthology all speak in a collective voice, and that is a voice from the past demanding that we do something to counter this pathological road to destruction. Our works are a beginning that can possibly serve as the first dose of medicine desperately needed for a cure.
